We conducted our Fall helicopter survey at the RPQRR and I am happy to report some good tidings. We saw 7.0 birds per mile, the highest seen since 2017 (albeit a good bit lower than that year). Average covey size was 12.1 birds and is the highest since Fall 2016. Using DeMaso et al.’s predictive equation, we estimate our density at about 1 quail per 3.8 acres. We’re pleased to see our abundance trending upwards, and if we can get a mild winter and good spring rains, we hope to see some good gains next year. by Jon Purvis
