With Fall upon us, activity at the Research Ranch is in full swing. We just wrapped up our Fall covey counts and are now gearing up for helicopter surveys and the Fall quail trapping season. This year, we recorded an average of 7.8 coveys per stop—the highest count recorded at RPQRR since the 2015-2017 “boom”, aligning with trends across our other surveys.
This month, we’ll begin pre-baiting our quail trapping sites. Come December 2-14, trapping will be in full swing. We anticipate banding over 1,000 quails (bobwhites and scaled quail). That will require long days so we’re seeking volunteers to help. If you’re interested, please email me at mriggs@quailresearch.org. – by Mitchell Riggs
