Blue Quail Translocation takes off

By March 1, 2021 Articles

Our latest translocation project involves moving 400 scaled (“blue”) quail over the next two years (200 birds each year) on the Hawks Double Mountain Ranch (HDMR) near Rotan. We’ll be testing a “hard release” versus an “anchored delayed release.” Most of the hens will be fitted with necklace-style radio transmitters then monitored through the summer. The first shipment of birds (24) served as our hard-release. As of 23 Feb, the birds were still on site and survival had been “good”; we have lost 4 birds to predation thus far. We thank HDMR for funding, and our “quail donors” for supporting our translocation research. Stay tuned for updates.
