Nesting Update: Despite All Odds!

September 1 marks the end of our “official” nesting season at RPQRR, and despite torrid conditions over the last half of the summer, the season proved to be a record one. Jon Purvis provided this summary of the 2023 nesting season:

  • 91 nests total; no nests are being tracked at this time;
  • 45.1% success rate (below average for RPQRR);
  • 59 first attempts; 26 second attempts; 6 third attempts;
  • a record “early” nesting attempts; 23 found in April, 19 in May, 26 in June, 14 in July, and 9 in August;
  • hatch dates ranged from 5/11/23 – 8/21/23;
  • number of eggs ranged from 3 – 27; average = 13.9;
  • number of eggs hatched ranged from 1 – 17; average = 10.3
