Quail Nest Substrates used at RPQRR

By June 1, 2023 Articles, Media

We have recorded and monitored 380 bobwhite nests since 2010. The pie chart shows which vegetation types were used most commonly for nesting. Grass (typically silver bluestem, Kleingrass, or Texas wintergrass) has comprised 58% of the nests. Various plant associations, which usually include grass, comprised most of the rest. Prickly pear and yucca are also important substrates, especially so during more droughty years (like 2023 was at the start of nesting season). by John Purvis
